Gnarled Western Cedar (Juniper) in Oak Creek Canyon, near Sedona, Arizona. This page contains personal notes on our visits to Oak Creek Canyon, near Sedona, Arizona.
 Personal Notes
We have been through Oak Creek Canyon several times since the mid-80s, however, we have not spent much time there. And that is a shame, because it is a gorgeous canyon, with red rock highlighted by greenery and generally blue skies. It is an exciting place, but often crowded in the warmer months. And I think that is why we haven't spent the time there that we would like. The first time I drove through there were just too many vehicles and screaming children and people moving about. I was looking for open space and peace. Because of that initial experience, we have avoided the area for camping and hiking trips, although we feel compelled to return.

Our most recent visit to the canyon was on our drive to Tucson in December of 2003. We had spent the night in Flagstaff and decided to take the scenic route down through the canyon, along Highway 89A. It was a cloudy, somewhat gloomy day, but the scenery was still amazing. And ... there were very few people about. We had most of the canyon to ourselves. There were still a few leaves dangling from the trees, and it has a very fallish atmosphere. The air was cold and brisk, but coming from farther north, the temperatures were no bother.

Along the drive we spotted a blue heron in the creek, peacefully standing watch of the surrounding domain. We took lots of photos of the area and stopped at a trailhead to check out the Red Rock Trail system, which runs through the area. The whole area looks to be elaborate and interesting.

On the south side of Oak Creek Canyon we stopped in Sedona to pick up some breakfast at a Circle K. They talk about Sedona being some sort of confluence of cosmic energies and forces. I took several photos of a strange group of clouds bubbling over the red rock above Sedona. It was as if there were some invisible energy emanating from the spires and peaks. Very amazing and quite Interesting.

Perhaps someday we'll make it back in the warmer months when we can hike and enjoy the scenery more fully. It would be well worth the effort and time.

On this trip to the Flagstaff area we originally intended to take a day and do a nice hike within Oak Creek Canyon. But health issues and the weather deterred us from our plan. So basically this trip was just a nice drive up the canyon through a light rain. The leaves were just starting to turn, and the tight curves on the road were a bit more difficult because they were wet pavement, but we little trouble and made it to the top okay. There is something peaceful and inviting about the small lodges and motels and other dwellings along the sides of this narrow canyon. We haven't spent much time exploring the canyon, but it's a place we find ourselves drawn back to over and over again.
