We've visited the mission on several occasions over the years. It has become sort of a tourist destination, but it is well worth at least a brief stop. The simple white lines of the exterior are contrasted by the elaborately designed and details interior, with its sometimes gaudy colors.
The grounds are not large, but this is a good example of old Spanish architecture and the way folks lived in this area about 300 years ago. There is a small gift shop, and across the parking lot, to the south, the Tahono O'odham (formerly the Papago) have set up larger shops that offer native made crafts. Sometimes they have food booths outside of the mission, in the parking area, with some pretty tasty local dishes.
Just remember, this is a functioning church and the religious beliefs of these people should be respected. |
