Anne spent most of her early years living in the small mining town of Silver Bell, Arizona. It is near the large town of Marana, and a few miles northwest of Tucson, nestled among the Silver Bell Mountains.

In the 1970s mining operations at the ASARCO mine shut down, and the company town was disbanded. Most of the modern homes were moved to other locations in and around Tucson. In the late 1980s, the last time we visited the site, there were still a few homes and company structures standing, but apparently abandoned.
