 Personal Notes

We have visited Sunset Crater Volcanic National Monument on several occasions. It is a small Monument with only a few trails and a small, exposed campground (which is actually in the nearby national forest). The autumn or the spring would be the best time to camp there, however, we have encountered gnats on at least one occasion. The trails are asphalt but the scenery is interesting and well worth the time to explore.

5:41 p.m.
We finished our visit to the Wukoki Pueblo in Wupatki National Monument. It was 66 degrees out and the Sun was just a bit above the horizon, with some clouds. We decided to drive back to Flagstaff through Sunset Crater National Monument, although we won't be able to stop.

We've visited Sunset a couple of times before (I believe most recently in 1991) and did all of the walks at that time. It is mostly views of the volcanoes and lava flows, much like we have seen in Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho, and other volcanic areas.

But it is still beautiful country and well worth the time to visit, when you have time.
