 Overview
Walnut Canyon National Monument preserves a small archaeological area with a large number of ancient dwellings. Cliff dwellings built by people of the Sinagua culture between 1100 and 1250 are preserved in this monument.

Elevation: Rim: 6690 feet; Canyon Floor: 6,340 feet.
Fees: $5.00 entrance fee; free under 16.
Hours: Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may be extended in the summer. Closed December 25. The Island Trail closes one hour earlier.
Visitor Center: Yes; with an information desk, exhibits, a bookstore, and a panoramic view of the canyon.
Facilities: A Visitor Center, bookstore, picnic areas, a few trails, no camping, and a small but informative museum.
Directions:
  • Take I-40 Exit 204, 7.5 miles east of Flagstaff. Drive south 3 miles to the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center. Be advised that the parking lot has a tight turnaround for towed vehicles. Vehicles longer than 40 feet are not recommended.

There is no camping allowed within the monument. There is camping in the Flagstaff area and near Sunset Crater National Monument.
