| About 800 years ago, the place where Wupatki National Monument stands was the home of the largest and tallest pueblo in existence. It was home to 85 to 100 people, and several thousand more lived within a day's walk. It is thought that the nearby Sunset Crater volcano played a part in the fall of this pueblo. The Monument
preserves the ruins of red sandstone pueblos built about 1100
A.D. by farming Sinagua and Anasazi people. |
