This page presents information on hiking on Santa Catalina Island in California.

 Hiking

For safety and maximum enjoyment, hiking into the interior requires a free hiking permit, which may be obtained at the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy's Visitor Office at 125 Claressa Avenue, Avalon, California or at the Visitor Services office found at the foot of the pier.

The Two Harbors area offers day hikes ranging from easy to difficult. Some trails follow existing roads while others meander up ridges offering expansive views of the ocean, Channel Islands, and the mainland.

Backpacking Catalina is a great way to see more of the island while enjoying a variety of island sites. An ideal trip is to arrive at one port and backpack through the island interior departing from the other port. The cross-channel carriers servicing Catalina also provide direct service to Two Harbors. Limited bus service is also available between Avalon and Two Harbors with stops at all campgrounds along the way.

Three seaside campgrounds located at Parson's Landing, Two Harbors and Little Harbor, one mountain top campground, Blackjack, and "city" camping, give the backpacker ample overnight camping spots. Camping is allowed only in designated campgrounds.
