After breakfast we drove west, then north, from South Lake Tahoe, along the west side of the lake. We stopped at the Taylor Creek Forest Service Visitor's Center and toured the Rainbow Nature Trail and the Beach Trail, then headed through the trees toward the Tallac Historic Site.

It was cloudy the entire time we were there. We visited the Baldwin Estate and the immediate area right around it. The log "cabin" has been preserved like a museum. The house is filled with furniture and other items from the early part of the Twentieth Century, when the buildings were occupied on a regular basis. It's a very large cabin, with a great view of the lake through the trees, a patio surrounded on three sides by the house, a large kitchen and pantry area, a great fireplace, and more. We realized quickly that the rest of the site, with its winding paths and many buildings, was way too large to visit during the time that we had. We figure we'll have to catch the rest on some later trip.

We really got lucky, in that when we first arrived at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, around 9:00 a.m., there were hardly any tourists. By the time we left Tallac, the place was swarming with visitors.
