 Overview

Trails are the safest routes when traveling off road.

  • Straying off trails results in lost children and hikers as well as injuries caused by falls.
  • Do not scramble up cliffs or over rocks. Take the trail. Rock climbing is for the experienced.
  • For safety reasons horses and mules have the right-of-way on trails. Stand quietly at trailside until they pass.

There are many miles of trails throughout Yosemite National Park. A few popular trails are listed below.

 Backcountry Trails

Free wilderness permits are available at the Visitor Center and the Wawona and Big Oak Flat Ranger Stations. Read all information provided. Voluntary registration cards are available for climbers and day users.

Base of Yosemite Falls
Distance: .5 miles round trip Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 40 feet
Trailhead: The trailhead is in the Lower Yosemite Fall parking area, near Shuttle Bus Stop #6.
Description:  
Dog Lake
Distance: 3 miles round trip Rating: Easy to Moderate
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 800 feet
Trailhead: The trailhead is a bit hard to find because it is located on the access road to Tuolumne Lodge. Travel east on the Tioga Road over the Tuolumne River bridge. Turn right on the well-marked road to the Lodge. Proceed about a quarter of a mile (past the Ranger Station) to a popular parking lot on the left. Park and head north up the embankment and over the Tioga Road onto the Dog Lake trail.

Gaylor Lakes/Granite Lakes
Distance: 3 to 6 miles round trip Rating: Easy to Moderate
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 700 to 1000 feet
Trailhead: The trailhead is off of the parking lot just west of the Tioga Pass Entrance Station on the north side of the Tioga Road.
Description:  
Lembert Dome
Distance: 2.8 miles round trip Rating: Moderate to Strenuous
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 900 feet
Trailhead: The trailhead is a bit hard to find because it is located on the access road to Tuolumne Lodge. Travel east on the Tioga Road over the Tuolumne River bridge. Turn right on the well-marked road to the Lodge. Proceed about a quarter of a mile (past the Ranger Station) to a popular parking lot on the left. Park and head north up the embankment and over the Tioga Road onto the Dog Lake trail.

Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River
Distance: The distance varies depending on how far you proceed. Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: None
Trailhead: The trailhead is a bit hard to find because it is located on the access road to Tuolumne Lodge. Travel east on the Tioga Road over the Tuolumne River bridge. Turn right on the well-marked road to the Lodge. Proceed about a quarter of a mile (past the Ranger Station) to a popular parking lot on the left. Park and head north up the embankment and over the Tioga Road onto the Dog Lake trail, and proceed south.

Soda Springs
Distance: 1.5 miles round trip Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: None
Trailhead: There are two routes to Soda Springs. The first leaves from the parking lot just north of the Tioga Road at road marker T-32, just to the east of the bridge over the Tuolumne River. Follow the gravel road to and around a locked gate. The other trail starts from the north side of the Tioga Road at a cross walk that is just east of the entrance road to the Visitor Center.
