Since 1980 I have visited Yosemite many times, at least once
in each of the four seasons. It is a spectacular park that
would require a lifetime to explore completely, and would
be well worth the effort.
If you are into waterfalls and cascades, the spring and early
summer are the best times to visit. The winter snow melt provides
an overwhelming abundance of water to feed the streams that
eventually pour over the granite surfaces of Yosemite Valley,
and other areas, to produce the wild falls. Even in dry years
there is water year-round over many falls, but when it has
been dry, and in the late summer and autumn, there is not
the volume one might desire. And many of the more famous falls,
such as Yosemite and Bridalveil, are often dry by the end
of the season. In the spring many of the lowland areas become
flooded, or are quite marshy. Always check with the rangers
before heading down a trail.
In the winter and early spring, when much of the surface
is covered in snow, there are different attractions. But even
in the warmer months the nights can get cold. The elevation
throughout most of the park is high and temperatures can drop
quickly. Be prepared with clothing for a variety of seasons
and weather conditions.
