The Anasazi Heritage Center is a museum interpreting the history and culture of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Four Corners region. More than 3.5 million artifacts from southwest Colorado are curated at the museum and are available for research.

  • $3.00 for adults, from March through October; free from November through February.
  • 17 and Under free.
  • School groups free.
  • Honors Federal Recreational Lands Passes
Hours: Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the summer, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November through February. Closed on Thanksgiving, December 25, and January 1.

Facilities: Museum, bookstore and gift shop, drinking water, restrooms, picnic tables.
Directions: Located on Highway 184, 10 miles north of Cortez, three miles west of Dolores, and 17 miles from Mesa Verde National Park, on the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway.

There are no established campgrounds within the Monument, or at the Heritage Center, although primitive camping is allowed in most places. Developed campsites can be found at McPhee Campground west of Dolores, and at Hovenweep National Monument, across the border in Utah.

Escalante Pueblo Ruins Trail
Distance: 1 mile round trip Rating: Easy to Moderate

Trailhead: At the Museum parking area.
Description: The paved trail makes a gradual ascent up to the top of a hill, with views of McPhee Reservoir, the surrounding mountain ranges, and the Escalante Pueblo Ruins. There is a picnic table at the top, and benches at various locations along the path.
