 Jones Hole

The rock art pictured here is found along the Jones Hole Trail on the north side of Dinosaur National Monument. Take the paved Jones Hole Road to the east, out of Vernal, and head northeast over Diamond Mountain. It's about a 40 mile drive. Park near the Jones Hole Fish Hatchery and take the marked Jones Hole Trail to the south. The pictographs are about 1.5 miles down the trail, after it crosses a bridge of Jones Creek. The rock art faces east and there are several panels between the bridge and the place where the trail crosses Ely Creek, a distance of about .5 miles. Map coordinates: ~ 40 34.106 N; 109 3.38 W; at an elevation of 5,363 feet.

These pictographs were probably painted by the Fremont Culture whose peoples made Jones Hole their home about 1,000 years ago.

This is a close up of a very distinctive critter that is obviously a mule deer or elk buck. The color is very vivid and seems to jump right out of the rock, especially when seen in contrast with the surrounding pieces.

Here are three very formal anthropomorphic figures. Unfortunately they have been damaged by later vandals. Even so, they are very distinctive and well done.

These three figures seem to represent a human, a dog of some sort, and perhaps a basket that might have been used for harvesting pinyon nuts and other grains.
