 Overview

Volcanic cones, craters, lava flows, and caves makes Craters of the Moon National Monument an astonishing landscape. The Monument was established by an act of Congress on May 2, 1924.

Area: 83 square miles
Elevation: 5,898 feet.
Fees: The entrance fee is $8.00 per vehicle. Those entering by bicycle, motorcycle, or foot pay $4.00 per person. Individuals age 15 and under enter free. 
Hours:

The Monument and Preserve remains open all year, although winter snows prevent automobile access around the Loop Drive from mid-November through mid-April. During the open period the road remains open at all hours.

Visitor Center: Open daily except for winter holidays; hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Facilities: Visitor center, restrooms, drinking water, overlooks, trails, wayside exhibits, amphitheater, bookstore, picnic tables, campground.
Directions: The Monument is 18 miles west of Arco on US 20, 26, and 93.

  • All lava is sharp. Be sure you take the proper safety precautions.
  • In the backcountry, roads are infrequently or never maintained and vehicular travel can often be difficult. A high-clearance 4-wheel-drive vehicle with good tires is advisable—passenger car travel is not recommended. There are absolutely no services available within this area. Have good maps and/or direction-finding equipment and use them. Be aware of rapidly changing road conditions.
