 Overview

Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument protects the world's richest known deposits from the late Pliocene era. The collection includes the largest concentration of fossil horses in North America and more than 100 other animal species.

The monument is located on high bluffs above the Snake River with a commanding view of the town of Hagerman, the Sawtooth Mountains, and the sagebrush country of the Oregon Trail. The Monument was authorized by Congress in November, 1988, to preserve the outstanding Pliocene fossil sites of the region.

Hours:
  • Winter: Thursday through Monday (from August 26th until Memorial weekend), 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Summer: Everyday (from Memorial Day weekend to August 25th): Sunday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Visitor Center: The Visitor Center is open on all federal holidays except Thanksgiving, December 25, and New Years Day.
Facilities: There is a temporary visitor center, a self-guided driving tour, trails, bookstore, and overlooks. Guided tours and interpretive activities are available from June through September.
Directions: The headquarters and Visitor Center is located in the town of Hagerman, at 221 North State Street.

Weather:

Hagerman valley is generally sunny, dry, and clear throughout the year. The winters are mild with occasional winter storms, but summers are extremely hot and dry. Summer high temperatures commonly run above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Comfortable clothing providing sun protection, a broad brimmed hat, and water are recommended in summer. Winter requires warmer clothing and light to medium jackets. Sturdy walking shoes are important year round.
