 Hiking

There are more than 750 miles of trails. Trails are usually passable at the lower elevations by mid-June, but many of the high-country passes may not be free of snow until late July. It is important to stay on marked trails and avoid crossing steep snow banks.

Forests and Fire Nature Trail (Formerly Huckleberry Mountain Nature Trail)
Distance: .6 mile loop Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 100 feet
Trailhead: .3 miles west of the Camas Creek Entrance Station.
Description: A walk through the recovering forest after two major fires burned through the area. See the regeneration of the underbrush and the new trees as they cover the forest floor. The trail is exposed and climbs several steep but short hills as it loops through this forest of poles.
Swiftcurrent Nature Trail
Distance: 2.6 mile loop Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: Minimal
Trailhead: At the Swiftcurrent Picnic Area on the northwest side of Swiftcurrent Lake.
Description:  
Hidden Lake Nature Trail
Distance: 1.5 miles one way Rating: Easy to Moderate
Elevation: 6,680 feet Total Ascent: 500 feet
Trailhead: From the upper level of the Logan Pass Visitor Center.
Description: This boardwalk and natural surface trail climbs across an open meadow to Hidden Lake Overlook, with expansive views of the surrounding peaks and broad meadows.
Running Eagle Falls Nature Trail
Distance: .6 miles round trip Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 60 feet
Trailhead: One mile west of the Two Medicine entrance station.
Description: Formerly known as Trick Falls.
Trail of the Cedars Nature Trail
Distance: .2 mile loop Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: Level
Trailhead: Across from the Avalanche Campground Ranger Station along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Description: The entire trail is along a boardwalk.
Avalanche Lake Trail
Distance: 2 miles one way Rating: Easy to Moderate
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 500 feet
Trailhead: South of the Avalanche Gorge footbridge on the Trail of the Cedars Nature Trail.
Description: One of the most popular hikes within the Park due to its gentle grade and spectacular destination.
Gunsight Pass to Sun Point Trail
Distance: Approximately 7 miles one way Rating: Easy to Moderate
Elevation:   Total Ascent:  
Trailhead: From west to east, 14 miles west of St. Mary, along Going-to-the-Sun Road. From east to west, 9 miles west of St. Mary along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Description: This includes stops at Deadwood Falls, St. Mary Falls, Virginia Falls, Baring Falls, and Sun Point. Pit toilets are available at the Sun Point Nature Trail trailhead.
Sun Point Nature Trail
Distance: 1.3 miles round trip Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: Minimal
Trailhead: At the Sun Point parking area, 11 miles east of Logan Pass on Going-to-the-Sun road. Pit toilets are available.
Description: This short hike offers excellent views of St. Mary Lake and ends at Baring Falls.
Sunrift Gorge Trail
Distance: .3 miles one way Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent:  
Trailhead: Sunrift Gorge pullout along Going-to-the-Sun Road, 10 miles west of St. Mary.
Description:  
John's Lake Loop Trail
Distance: 3 mile loop Rating: Easy
Elevation:   Total Ascent: 160 feet
Trailhead: Watch for a sign on the Going-to-the-Sun Road north of Lake McDonald Lodge about 1.5 miles.
Description: This is a popular trail that runs through the forest above Lake McDonald and passes by Sacred Dancing Cascade and McDonald Falls as well as John's Lake.
