The rock art panels below Petroglyph Butte are distinctive in color as well as graphic design. I don't know much about their style or origins, but suspect that they were carved by the ancient Fremont Culture, which roamed this area of the Great Basin. The panels do show several atl-atl images that are common throughout the region.
Another thing that separates these panels from so many others is that the work surface is relatively rough when compared to that in other sites. And, the rock is somewhat more colorful on its surface, which, perhaps, is what attracted the natives to this site.
I have only visited this remote site on one occasion. |
