I've visited Rawhide on at least three occasions in the early to mid-1980s. It was a large town that covered a large area, which makes exploring the landscape interesting. Most of the buildings are gone, and when I last visited there were only a few buildings left standing. The most impressive was the sheriff's office, with its "squirrel cage" jail.
Many of the old mines, shafts, adits, and dumps are still visible on the surrounding hills, and I imagine an interested party could spend days just poking around. However, this location has been picked over by so many artifact hunters over the years that there probably isn't much left. But it's still fun to look around and imagine what life must have been like when Rawhide was a thriving community of 10,000.
It is an exposed location, so it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It is remote, so go prepared for anything. |
