Rhyolite once had a population of over 10,000. A prospector by the name of Shorty Harris found a gold filled quartz vein in 1904 and, as is typical, a rush began. The town immediately boomed with buildings springing up everywhere. One building was three stories tall. A stock exchange was formed. There was the usual red light district, hotels, stores, a school for 250 children, an ice plant, two electric plants, foundries, machine shops, and a hospital. The financial panic of 1907 began the end of the small city, and by 1910 production at the mill slowed. In 1916 the power was turned off in the town.
