I lived in Ely, Nevada for four years in the early 1980s. During that time I was able to visit and explore the Ward Charcoal Ovens on several occasions. I don't believe it was a State park at that time, but I could be wrong. It just seemed like a line of charcoal ovens surrounded by a barbed wire fence.
But the ovens are impressive and just as interesting as charcoal ovens that we've visited in other locations in California (Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, in Death Valley National Park) and in Utah (Old Iron Town Ruins). They are a bit off of the beaten path, but if you're headed from Ely toward Great Basin National Park this wouldn't be a bad place to stop and take a stretch or have a bit of lunch. The area is exposed, so drink plenty of water and wear protective clothing appropriate for the season. |
