 Personal Notes

 Wednesday, May 21, 2008

We drove south from Albuquerque along Interstate 25 to Los Lunas, where we followed the signs to El Cerro Tome.

8:17 a.m.
When we arrived at El Cerro Tome it was 69 degrees out. There is a small gravel parking area near a large set of metal sculptures (see the photo above) and a metal archway. If you look through the arch you can see that it frames the hill. There is a rough trial up the side of the steep hill to the top, where there are several large crosses, an altar, and lots of mementos left by those who climbed the hill hoping for a spiritual favor. Apparently the hill has some religious or spiritual significance to the local Christian community. I believe I read that on Good Friday there is a reenactment of the Passion of Christ, and mass is usually said at the top on Easter Sunday morning.

After we climbed to the top and looked around, with great views of the surrounding agricultural countryside, we walked back down and took a side trail to the volcanic rock along the southeast side of the hill. There we examined and photographed an array of petroglyphs of the Rio Grande Style. Lots of faces on the corners of the rock, as well and kokopellis, bear paws, and a variety of zoomorphs.

9:46 a.m.
Before we left we read a few of the informational signs arrayed along the walk way near the metal arch and parking area. From El Cerro Tome we headed south to the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.
