 Camping

There are no designated camping facilities within either the El Malpais National Monument nor the El Malpais National Conservation Area. Camping is available near Grants, New Mexico. However, campgrounds are being developed and should open soon.

For primitive camping in the Monument, it is recommended that you get a free backcountry use permit, available at the Visitor Centers. Overnight use in the National Conservation Area does not require a permit, but you are encouraged to notify Ranger Station staff to help them monitor use.

The Forest Service maintains several campgrounds near Mount Taylor. Phone: 505-287-8833. Also, nearby El Morro National Monument has a campground.
