Gran Quivira was established as a national monument in 1909, making it one of the oldest units of the National Park System. It was combined with the New Mexico state monuments of Abo and Quarai in 1980 to form Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.
The Gran Quivira Unit of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, called Las Humanas by early Spanish explorers, was the largest of the Salinas pueblos. From its beginnings as a cluster of pithouses 1,200 years ago, it grew into a thriving village of more than 20 masonry house blocks and 1,500 to 2,000 people. In this Unit there are two churches, excavated Indian structures, and exhibits. See the Gran Quivira Map for more details.
