On our drive from Farmington to Shiprock we stopped at the Waterflow Rock Art Panel, which is just east of the small town of Waterflow, New Mexico, across from the Big Rock Trading Post. The site is between mileposts 37 and 38 in the light buff colored rock on the north side of the road. There is a turn-out just to the west. The GPS Coordinates are at: 36 45.314N; 108 26.110W; at an elevation of 5,213 feet.

There are lots of petroglyphs on the cliff faces along the road, hidden up among the rocks. One of the distinctive features at this site are the number of geometric patterns that appear to represent the patterns woven into Native blankets. Some of the other images on these panels seems to be quite old, while other pieces are probably more modern.
Just past the cliffs, to the west, there is a gated road toward the north; obviously private property. But from the fence you can see a cliff face where there are more rock art samples. I photographed them from the fence line. Remember to respect private property, as well as the rock art itself, and any artifacts found nearby.
While we were climbing around, photographing the rock art, we found a small cliff dwelling under an overhang. Its size would probably indicate that it was used for storage rather than as a living space.
To reach some of the petroglyphs you must climb a steep, slippery slope to a ledge, but it is worth the effort to get a close-up of the rock-art. Just don't touch. |
