Overview

John Day Dam is located at the head of Lake Celilo, 216 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River. The dam crosses the river near Rufus, Oregon, about 25 miles upstream from The Dalles, just below the mouth of the John Day River. At this time no part of the dam is open for public access. In the future, the Corps hopes to make a fish viewing area available to the public.

There is no camping at the dam site, but there are many Oregon and Washington state parks along the length of the Columbia River, especially within the gorge. Many provide excellent camping opportunities.
