Box work in Wind Cave. This page presents our personal notes on our visits to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota.
 Personal Notes
Over the years I've visited Wind Cave numerous times, mostly in the 1970s. The Park is more than the cave, with its prairie dog towns and herds of buffalo and pronghorns and other wildlife. But the cave always seems to be the focal point of any trip to that area.

Wind Cave

We took the 3:30 p.m. tour, which took about an hour-and-a-half. The cave is not as interesting, visually, as Jewel Cave, except for its famous box work. It was a pleasant tour, though, and we had a good experience.

Prairie Dogs

After our tour of the cave we drove south to the junction of Highway 385, where we turned north. At the junction we stopped to watch the prairie dogs. It is quite a large village and the little critters are running all over the place, and don't seem as shy as one would expect. Although, I suppose, they have become accustomed to seeing humans in this area where they are protected. But it's not wise to approach too closely. Even though they may appear cute, they are rodents and can carry several different diseases that are best to avoid.
