Personal Notes

This page presents links to our personal notes on camp sites and hiking trails accessible from Big Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah.

The trails and campground within Big Cottonwood Canyon are just a short drive from our home along the Wasatch Front. Perhaps that is why we haven't hiked more of the local trails ... they are too close. It seems that we too often overlook what is right in our backyard for the treasures of more exotic areas. But to others, from outside of our area, the treasures in Big Cottonwood Canyon are worth their drive to visit.

In recent years we have been trying to rectify our oversight and have been gradually working our way down the list of local trails. We've recorded notes on our more recent hikes and visits, but we have hiked some of these trails on earlier occasions over the past twelve years. We intend to do more over the next twelve years, health willing.

(2004 Canyon Country Tour)

Silver Lake Nature Trail Loop

After a late breakfast we drove our guest from the Czech Republic up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the Silver Lake Recreation area near Solitude and Brighton. Once up the canyon we walked around Silver Lake and gave them a chance to acclimate and see some of our local nature. We saw ducks and Stellar’s Jays, squirrels, chipmunks, trout, and a variety of plants. We also spotted a beaver dam, but no beaver. It was a casual walk. The air was crisp and cool, and the sun felt nice. There were a few people along the trail, but mostly they were quiet and enjoying the scenery themselves.
