Newspaper Rock
| The Canyon Rims Recreation Area is a large area outside and along the east side Canyonlands National Park. One of the more popular and famous examples of rock art in Utah is Newspaper Rock, at Map Coordinates (NAD83): 37 59.304 N; 109 31.028 W; at an elevation of 6,275 feet. The panel is protected by a fence, and can be seen along Highway 211, on the way into the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.

Newspaper Rock displays a large variety of petroglyphs on one broad, well defined panel. As you can see from these photos, there are hundreds of small pieces telling a variety of stories, and covering a large period of time. There are symbols, zoomorphs and recognizable animals, and a few anthropomorphs. Because no one really knows what most of these images represent, you can let your own imagination guide you.

This part of the panel is to the right of that in the photo above. Most of these figures are only a few inches tall. The images of the horses with riders would seem to indicate that at least some of these figures are more recent, at least since the Spaniards brought the horse back to this continent.

This is a close up of one group of images. Again, there is quite a variety of objects, just in this one small area.
