A basin of limestone formations fill the amphitheater of this high-altitude monument near the top of the Grand Staircase. Cedar Breaks National Monument sits atop the western edge of the Markagunt Plateau. Erosion has carved the giant amphitheater 2,500 feet deep and more than three miles across. A fairyland of forms and colors appears below the rim. Ridges and pinnacles extend like buttresses from the steep cliffs. Cottony patches of clouds often drift through the craggy landscape.

Traces of iron, manganese, and other minerals have tinted the normally white limestone a rainbow of warm hues. The intense colors blaze during sunsets and glow even on a cloudy day.

Some say pioneers mistakenly identified indigenous junipers as cedars and so named the area. The region also boasts Bristlecone pine trees dating back 1,600 years. The Visitors Center, an attraction itself, was built in 1938. There is a campground and two relatively easy trails along the rim.

See the Monument's News and News Releases for current information.
