 Potash Road

The Potash Road (Highway 279) heads west just north of Moab, on the north side of the Colorado River. There are several locations along the road where petroglyph panels can be seen on the blackened, sheer cliff faces on the north side of the road. Some are marked.

Anthropomorphs
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
Horned anthropomorph reaching toward what looks like a desert big horn. The figure has the triangular shaped Fremont style body, but the arms and legs, with both hands and feet, is not typical.

An anthropomorph with short arms bent downward near the ends and spread legs with straight feet. The headdress looks a little like a jester's cap.

This Barrier Canyon style petroglyph has a solidly pecked torso and what look to be very short, stubby arms with, perhaps, fingers. There are two short legs with what may be feet and toes. The head has what look to be horns that have grown together.

There are three heavily ornamented anthropomorphs in this photo, two of whom are probably male. The three torsos are generally circular and may represent shields. All three figures have arms and legs, with hands and feet. Each appears to have a single feather protruding from the head. There is also a portion of a squiggly line in the upper left that may represent a journey or a map, and there is a small zoomorph to the right of the lower figure.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This figure which may or may not be an anthropomorph reminds me of a similar "monster" that I've seen in the Canyon Pintado area of northwestern Colorado. In this case there is only one "arm" and there are no feet, however, the general shape of the body and the open rectangular area in the "chest" area is reminiscent of the Pintado figure.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
Here are several more of the anthropomorphs that seem to be standing behind shields. Of interest, though, is that their hands are not holding the shields, so perhaps they have round bodies. Most have horn headdresses and are wearing large earrings. All have feet with toes and hands with slender fingers and most appear to be male. There is a pair of lines that connect the larger figures, running through their head and neck regions.

This is another of the anthropomorphs that has the shield-like body, horns coming off the head, large Fremont-style earrings, arms, legs, hands and feet, with fingers and toes, and is connected to the figures above by the same set of lines. There is another, smaller, but similarly styled figure in the lower left of this photo, and both figures appear to be male.

In this view you can see all of the figures described in the two photos above. The relationship of the three larger figures, with the connecting lines, is quite obvious in this view. Does this represent three generations, or does this indicate some sort of shared journey or adventure?
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
The central anthropomorph in this photo appears to be wearing a feathered headdress and carrying a bow. Obviously a male, this figure has the triangular Fremont style torso. He also appears to be holding a quiver or some other object. The smaller figure, in the upper right, is also holding a bow. This anthropomorph has more of a stick figure, but with an enlarged chest. The arms are extended and curve downward, similar to some of those seen on the Golf Course Panel on the east side of Moab. There may also be a small anthropomorph in the upper left, as well as an unusual object that looks like an arm bent at the elbow with a hand and fingers. There is also a small Zoomorph and a T to the right of the main figure.

This is one of several chains of anthropomorphs found on these panels. They all seem to be locking arms or holding hands. Some of these triangular shaped figures have horns for a headdress, while others have what looks to be a single feather.

Three anthropomorphs without arms or legs. The one on the left appears to have been pecked. The middle one has earrings and a single feather. The one on the right has horns.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
There are several anthropomorphs in this photo. The large figure is quite distinctive, with a double set of horns coming from the head. The torso is triangular shaped from the shoulders down, but then flares out in the hip area, with lateral lines protruding from that area. The figure has spread arms that bend downward at the elbow, with large four-fingered hands dangling down. There is what appears to be a snake cutting downward through the figures right shoulder. There are multiple smaller figures, both anthropomorphs and zoomorphs, surrounding this figure.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
The main figure in this photo is an anthropomorph holding what looks to be a shield made up of a spiral. The figure has what may be horns that touch in the middle. It is also wearing earrings and has extended arms, bent at the elbows. The right arm ends in a large hand with five fingers. This figure has legs which are bent and the knees. There are several smaller hard to identify figures scattered nearby.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
There are several interesting anthropomorphs in this photo. Most have the triangular shaped torso, while one has an inverted triangular shape, giving it the appearance of a cone-head, with short arms and legs. There are three small figures holding hands.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is a well defined anthropomorph with a triangular torso and outstretched arms that curve downward. The figure has horns and earrings, as well as legs and fet.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This photo shows two prominent anthropomorphs. The one on the left has a more cylindrical shaped body and holds a shield in its right hand and what looks like a very long spear in its left. The figure on the right has a torso with a large chest and narrow hips. It has long, straight horns coming out of its head and appears to be waving with its left arm and hand. In its right hand it carries a shield. Both shields are made up of concentric circles. There is a vertical zigzag figure, that could be a snake, near the right foot of the second figure, and a canine-like zoomorph near the left foot. There may also be a small snake just below the shield of the left figure.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This figure has somewhat of a turtle shaped body, but the head appears to have horns.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is an unusual figure with a mostly triangular shaped torso that has long horizontal lines extending from either side of its hip area. This appears to be a male figure, with double horned head and extended arms that bend at the elbows. The figure has short legs with large feet and detailed toes.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is a very unusual petroglyph figure with googly eyes and an oval shaped face much like some of the pictographs seen at the Thompson Canyon site in the Book Cliffs. The body seems very fluid, giving the impression of action. There are wavy arms, and one of the legs is raised, as if kicking upwards.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This small figure with warms and legs has long wavy down-turned"horns" protruding from the head.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This photo shows two small figures, one above the other. The top figure has long horns, spread legs, and a round mid section. If it weren't for the horns I might think this was a pregnant female ready to give birth. The lower figure has an unusually shaped head, with down-turned features. The stick figure torso seems to be standing behind a shield.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This faded portion of the panel appears to feature two anthropomorphs that may be holding hands. The figure on the right has horns and earrings and the typical triangular shaped torso.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
In this faded portion of the panel there is a single anthropomorph with earrings and raised, downward curved arms and a typical triangular shaped torso. There also appears to be a pair of horizontal parallel lines beneath the figure, or, perhaps, a snake.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This photo shows two similar anthropomorphs. Each has the typical triangular shaped torso, dangling earrings, legs, and feet with obvious toes. One has horns coming from its head, while the other has has a circle (like a halo) behind its head. The figure on the right is holding a bow and a shield in its left hand while the figure on the left is holding what looks like a bow in its left hand and is touching a shield with its right hand.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This anthropomorph has a rectangular body with legs and feet. The head is somewhat pointed. The figure has a right arm only, which appears to be holding a large shield, with a geometric interior pattern. A horizontal line passes through the head.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah. This photo shows the relationship of several of the anthropomorphs describe above.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is an unusual anthropomorph with broad shoulders or thick upper arms. The torso is somewhat triangular, but not well defined in that way. The figure has two short legs with simple feet. The head is circular and sits upon a thick neck. A squiggly line runs from the end of the left "arm" while a shield or bag hangs from the right arm.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
There are four anthropomorphs and one zoomorph within this portion of the panel, each considerably different than the others. The small figure in the lower left has an almost carrot shaped torso with short extended arms that curve downward. The figure seems to be suspended beneath a shield composed of two concentric circles, which is itself suspended from the hand of the largest figure in this photo. This larger figure has a somewhat triangular shaped body, a round head with earrings, and two short spread legs. The short arms are curved downward. Next to this figure is another small figure with a somewhat oval shaped body with legs and curved arms and a small round head. This small figure seems to be pulling a shield like object with a rope. The fourth figure is in the upper right and has a more oval shaped body with two short legs. The arms are short and each has a large hand with spread fingers. The figure has a mound shaped head with horns and appears to be holding a shield of three concentric circles with its left hand. There is a canine zoomorph near its left leg.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
There are four prominent anthropomorphs in this photo, with several zoomorphs. There is also a portion of a line that may represent a map or a journey. Two of the figures have horns coming from their heads, while two do not. One of the figures has longer arms with hands and spread fingers.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This anthropomorph either has a circular body or is standing behind a shield. Arms protrude from the lower portion of the "shield," as well as a thinner portion of the lower torso. The figure has two legs with feet and spread toes, as well as a prominent penis. The round head sits atop a neck and has two earrings and a feather.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This Anthropomorph has a round, chubby-looking figure with short legs and what may be a penis. The two arms extend from the shoulder area, and bend downward. The round head sits atop a long, thin neck and has earrings and a feather. There is also what appears to be a rabbit or sitting dog zoomorph just off of the left shoulder.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah. This photo shows the relationship of several of the figures describe above.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is another of the figures with a rounded, shield-like chest above a narrower lower torso. The arms protrude from the lower part of the upper body and have three fingered hands. The round head sits atop a long thin neck and has earrings and a single feather.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah. This solo anthropomorph has a triangular torso with extended stick figure arms and legs. The left hand is raised as if in greeting, while the right hand is bent downward.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
I think of this as The Waving Man. It is similar to the figure above, but is better defined. Again it is the left hand that is raised as if waving. The hand has five fingers. The right arm extends straight out from the shoulder area and also has a five fingered hand. The figure has two legs, but no feet.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is another well defined waving figure, with a squat, well-defined triangular torso. Again it is the left hand that is raised, and again the hand has five fingers. The right arm is again extended straight out, and there appears to be a hand, but that part of the panel has spalled off so that cannot be confirmed. This figure has two legs with feet. The figure has a round head sitting atop a short neck, and is wearing earrings and a single feather.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
It's difficult to tell if this is an anthropomorph or something else. It appears to have a modified triangular torso with long raised arms, but there is no neck or head.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This figure has a long triangular shaped torso with extended straight arms that bend downward at the elbows, with large hands and spread fingers. The circular head sits almost directly upon the torso and has prominent horns. The figure also has legs. There are at least two small zoomorphs to the left of this figure, one of which appears to be a canine. There might also be a small snake figure to the figure's lower right.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
There are two anthropomorphs in this photo. The larger figure has a somewhat kachina shape, with extended arms. The is a hand on the right arm, with spread fingers. The figure may have horns, but that is uncertain. There does appear to be a slender line that leads form the larger figure's head to that of the smaller figure. This smaller figure has a round body with short arms and legs and a head sitting atop a long neck. The head has horns.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This figure has the triangular shaped torso with legs bent at the knees and feet. The arms extend straight out from the shoulders, then bend downward at the elbows, ending with hands, each with five spread fingers. The crescent shaped head sits atop a thin neck. There may be some sort of a small zoomorph near the left foot.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This photo shows a procession of seven stick figures that appear to be wearing large packs. Each head appears to have a long curved feather.

This figure has a triangular shaped torso with a thick neck and round head. The arms come straight out from the shoulders and bend downward at the elbows. The hands have spread fingers. The figure has legs and feet, with spread toes.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This is an unusual figure with a rounded, but somewhat triangular shaped body. The head is somewhat square and sits directly upon the body. There are what appear to be arms, but they extend from lower down on the torso than expected. The figure has two legs, but no feet.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
These two figures are very similar. They have triangular shaped torsos with arms and legs. They both have feet, but do not appear to have hands, although one appears to be holding some sort of object. They both have long necks and the heads appear to be made of what are probably feathered headdresses.

Geometric Figures and Patterns
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
Possibly a basket or some sort of net. There appears to be the image of a small insect below the basket, possibly a spider. There is also a small forked image, or a simple anthropomorph with upraised arms and a long neck.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
A long horizontal line with many short vertical lines descending from it. There are also many small zoomorphic figures, possibly desert big horn sheep, and a solo anthropomorphic figure beneath this object. This may represent a hunting scene, where the sheep were herded into an enclosed area with a fence around it to entrapped the sheep until they could be slaughtered.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
This unusual figure may be several objects stacked one on top of the other. I'm not quite sure what this might represent.

This figure cold represent some sort of a map. There are many figures on these panels that show anthropomorphs with back packs or in the act of walking, and many of these squiggly lines or other wandering lines that may represent maps or pathways or journeys.
Rock art from along the Potash Road within the Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah.
Could these figures represent the days spent on a journey? Could they be simple maps? Could they represent the steep canyons that the Green and Colorado rivers flow through in this region, with the confluence where these two figures meet?
