The Pony Express Trail passes along the Fish Springs Wildlife Refuge. We stopped to look around. There is a Ranger Station there, with an easily accessed informational kiosk with lots of printed material on the Refuge and other local attractions. We discovered that they have a designated driving tour through the refuge, so decide to check it out. Along the way there is a picnic area with a pit toilet, but no drinking water. The location is shady, but there were lots of insects flying about, and, as you might expect in a marshy area, a bit of humidity.
We drove on the marked route through the various ponds where we spotted lots of different kinds of water birds, as well as a coyote running off in the distance. I go some great photos of Snowy Egrets, a pair of Sandhill Cranes, swallows, American Avocets, Black-crowned Night Herons, Cormorants, and lots of ducks and geese. We imagine that in the fall or earlier in the spring there may be lots more migratory birds out there. It could be quite a sight.
