The Golden Spike National Historic Site commemorates the completion of the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit. On that day, a golden spike was symbolically tapped into a polished laurel-wood tie and then a final iron spike was driven to complete the railroad, thus linking East and West for the first time. |
