San Juan River, Goosenecks State Park.Goosenecks State Park

Personal Notes

This page presents our personal notes on our visit to Goosenecks State Park in Utah.

Friday, October 10, 2003

After lunch we drove south on Highway 163 through Bluff, where we saw the Navajo Twin Rocks as we drove by. At the junction with Highway 261 we turned north a short way to its junction with a road marked as 361, which took us four miles to the Goosenecks of the San Juan State Park. The road is clearly marked.

There is a gravel parking lot with picnic tables and a vault type rest room. There are great views of the Goosenecks and the river, and of Cedar Mesa to the north. Monument Valley is visible to the south and west. But the area is very exposed and is probably quite hot in the summer months. There was a haze over the area and dark clouds were building up to the south and east. There were a few other tourists out there while we were there.

We spent some time watching a raven playing in the wind right above our heads. It seemed that he enjoyed the audience.

As you can see from the photo above, the San Juan River is running muddy, with sort of a tan color.

From there we drove back to 261 and headed north to the Moki Dugway.
