Notom Road Scenic Backway
Personal Notes
This page presents our personal notes on our visits to the Notom Road Scenic Backway in Utah.
We've been down the Notom Road Scenic Backway a couple of times now, and have enjoyed each journey. Due to the natural surface, the drive can be a bit slow at times, but that gives you more time to take in the amazing scenery. There is some local traffic on this road, so be careful when approaching the crest of a blind hill. Stay to the right and hope that anyone coming from the other direction will do the same.
Sections of the road are within Capitol Reef National Park, while other sections cross BLM land. Obey all signs and be kind to the land.
If you come in from the north, along Highway 24, you can take the Burr Trail Scenic Backway up the switchbacks in Burr Canyon, visit Muley Twist and take a short hike out to the Strikevalley Overlook for some spectacular views of where you've just been. Then continue west along the Burr Trail to the town of Boulder, where you can catch Highway 12 back to the north, over Boulder Mountain, to its junction with Highway 24 near Torrey.
