 Overview

Sand Island, which is not an island at all, features a large petroglyph panel on the sandstone cliffs along the San Juan River. There are five Kokopelli’s among the figures on this panel. The panel displays glyphs from 800 to 2500 years old. This location is also a popular launch site for float trips on the San Juan River.

Visitor Center: A Ranger Station.
Facilities: Ranger Station, boat launch, picnic tables, pit toilets, drinking water, campground.
Directions:

Go west of Bluff about 3 miles on UT 163 and turn left into the Sand Wash Recreation Area, near mile marker 22.  This road leads to the campground and restrooms.

Weather:

Summer highs can reach into the 90s, with overnight lows down into the 60s. Winter highs are in the 40, with overnight lows down into the teens.
