Sheep Creek Loop Scenic Backway
Personal Notes
This page contains our personal notes on our visit to the Sheep Creek Loop Scenic Backway in Utah.

We drove on Highway 44 to the Sheep Creek Geological Loop, along the west side of the Flaming
Gorge National Recreation Area. Although it is adjacent to the Recreation Area, it is not a part of the Recreation Area.
There are some great overlooks along the way, which provide panoramic views of the Flaming Gorge part of the Recreation Area, with its red tilted rock contrasted against the blue of the reservoir.
We drove along the paved road through the Sheep Creek Geologic Area and enjoyed the rugged outcrops and unusual spires and colors and geologic formations. There is at least one campground in that area. I had thought that I read that the road was one-way, but traffic was going in both directions. The road ends with a series of tight switchbacks that climb up onto a high meadow area. I had also heard that there was a herd of Mountain Sheep in the area, but we didn't see any on our trip through. There were quite a few tourists all along the route.
From there we drove a Forest Service road up to the Historic Ute Fire Tower.
