On the way back along the paved road to the Raceway we saw another road leading up over a pass. This turned out to be Leppy Pass. We had hoped to find the road to Danger Cave, but soon realized that this paved road when on for quite a ways in the wrong direction. So we turned back, and, along the way, noticed an informational sign out a ways, along a dirt road.
The sign marked the beginning of the Silver Island Mountain Backcountry Byway, in the Silver Island Recreation Area. There is a 54 mile dirt road that makes a loop around the Silver Island Mountains and returns to this spot. It looks like a descent road, especially for a high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. Because of the late hour we had to set this adventure aside for another time, but it does look like it would be an interesting route. It covers part of the Donner-Reid Trail and the Hastings Cutoff, so there is also historical value to the road. There are also great expansive views across the salt flats, and volcanic mountain peaks on the left side. Of course, a full gas tank and plenty of extra water would be advisable on a road like this. An extra spare tire wouldn't be a thing either.
