The Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway follows a short nine mile graded dirt road from its intersection with Utah Highway 59, over Smithsonian Butte, then down to its intersection with Highway 9 at Rockville. This route is best driven from the south to the north because of the spectacular views of Zion Canyon and the surrounding cliffs.

Directions: Turn north onto the byway from Utah Highway 59, about 14.5 miles from the southeast side of Hurricane, at what is known locally as the Big Plain Junction, between mileposts 8 and 9. There is a small sign on the highway indicating the byway.

There is no designated camping along the byway, but camping is available in Springdale and within Zion National Park.

There are no established hiking trails along the byway.
