Personal Notes

This page presents our personal notes on our drive through the Valley of the Gods in Utah.

We drove back along the road from Muley Point to the junction with 261, then drove down the Moki Dugway to a point near its base where another road heads off to the east. This road is well marked for the Valley of the Gods. This is a rutted, bumpy natural surface road through some spectacular geologic features, much like Monument Valley, but more condensed and perhaps a bit smaller in scale, but exciting nevertheless. This road runs for about 18 miles to the east, then north, and then to the south to join Highway 163, about 14 miles west of Bluff. Although we encountered two or three cars along the road, I would recommend that only those with high centered four-wheel-drive vehicles take this road, especially the more western section of the road. There were some nasty spots along the way and we finally put the Trooper into four wheel drive to make it easier (although that wasn't necessary). The road along the east side has been graded and is graveled, and passenger cars can probably make that run far enough to at least see the main body of monuments and spires. From there we took 163 back through Bluff and up to Blanding.
