Grand Coulee Dam is the largest hydro power producer in the USA, with a capacity of 6,809 MW, and third in the world. The dam is still considered one of the largest concrete structures on earth. It contains almost 12 million cubic yards of concrete. There is enough concrete in the dam to build a sidewalk four feet wide and four inches thick 50,000 miles long, or twice around the equator. The dam is 550 feet tall and 5,223 feet across.
Apparently the name of the Grand Coulee Dam National Recreation Area has been changed to Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Lake Roosevelt runs from the back of Grand Coulee Dam all the way to Canada, 151 miles. |
