We made our way to the Castle Gardens Scenic Area. There are some twists and turns on the graded dirt road on the way in, but the directions we had got us to the right place. It's kind of a small area, but interesting none the less. There is a solo vault toilet, but it is modern and was clean on the day we visited. There is no drinking water, but at two locations along the loop drive there are picnic tables with grills. The sites are mostly exposed, and because of the surrounding white surfaces, would no doubt be hot in the summer months.
We stopped for a picnic lunch and then took a little walk up to the top of the cliffs. Actually it was a short climb up a worn path behind the picnic area. We ended up at the level of the pinnacles, and had great views of the surrounding area, including the next little canyon over. It appears that one could spend some time climbing around these spires and exploring the paths that seem to wind through the upper areas of the local geology.
It's one of those little badlands areas that gives plenty of opportunity for fantasizing about whatever pops into your mind, based on the eroded features. I imagine that at different times of the year, and different times of the day, the area would look different as the angle of the sun changes.
While we were there the temperature was 85 degrees.
