 General Overview

The first time I visited Flaming Gorge was back in the late summer of 1971. My wife and I were on the way home from three months of field work on the Aquarius Plateau in southern Utah. We were heading north to visit Yellowstone and passed through Vernal and Flaming Gorge on the way.

I remember being impressed by the tilted red rock in contrast to the rich blues of the reservoir, and the sense of open space. That was only a brief trip through, but those few minutes have lingered over the years. More recently we decided to make visits every couple of years. The notes here are from our two recent trips.

There is much to explore in and around Flaming Gorge, and there seems to be something for everyone: water, sun, trails, mountains, forests, wildlife, and more.
