After viewing the rock art at Legend Rocks State Petroglyph Site we continued on northwest along Highway 120 to its junction with Highway 431, where we turned east and continued on to the Gooseberry Badlands Scenic Overlook. The area is signed, and there is a parking area, but no facilities nor drinking water. There is, however, a short, fairly easy 1.5 mile trail through the badlands. On a cloudy day, or in the spring or autumn, this would be a pleasant walk, but in the warmer months, this could be a very hot hike because there is little or no shade.
However, in spite of the sun, the trail takes you through very colorful erosional features, with reds and oranges and buffs and everything in between adding to the fascinating landscape. It took us about 45 minutes to walk the loop, stopping to take many photos, and to point out spectacular views. It's a desolate area, but has a fantasy look about it. Again, this is one of those areas where visits in the different seasons or at different times during the day might show variations in color and shadow.
