| I first visited Jackson
Hole and Grand Teton National Park in the late summer of 1971.
We had car trouble and after the expense of the repairs in
Jackson, we had little cash and so hurried through the Tetons
on our way to a whirlwind half-day tour of Yellowstone. So
my early memories of the Tetons were of a series of sharp
peaks toped by glaciers and surrounded by low clouds.
Over the years I have visited this area
several times, only once, in 1976, spending more than the
time necessary to travel the distance from Jackson to the
South Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. In 1976 Anne
and I spent a long Labor Day weekend exploring the tourist
sights and making the relatively easy hike around Jenny Lake.
That weekend was spent camping at Jenny Lake to wake each
morning to heavy fog. We had a similar experience over the
same holiday weekend in 2003. Lots of light rain and fog.
But hey, we're in a drought out here in the west, and any
rain is welcome. |
Jenny Lake
In 1996 Anne and I camped in the Jenny Lake Campground and hike the trail that circles the lake. I don't remember the distance right now, but I always remember it as a pleasant experience. There is very little elevation gain or loss, and the trail is clearly marked and quite easy. There are many great views across the lake, with the Tetons reflected upon the water. |
