The Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument was constructed in 1959 by an art professor at the University of Wyoming, in Laramie. Robert Russin constructed the 13 foot high bronze bust of Lincoln's head while consuming 10 tons of clay and 11 months of work. It is the largest bronze bust in the United States. The bust sits on top of a 35 foot tall granite base, which is hollow.
Interstate 80 follows the path of the first transcontinental railroad line and the old Lincoln Highway. The sculpture originally sat atop the summit of Sherman Hill, about a half mile to the west and 195 feet higher, which is the highest point of the Lincoln Highway. It was moved to its present location in 1969 when Interstate 80 opened.
