 Personal Notes

Since we drive Interstate 80 between Salt Lake City and Omaha on a regular basis, we pass by this Monument quite often, but we've only stopped once. We tend to stay in Laramie, which is only ten miles to the west, so don't generally need the services of the associated rest area. But it is worth stopping if only briefly to see the Memorial.

The bust and stone body are quite impressive and sit on a ridge overlooking the Interstate as it swoops down Telephone Canyon toward the small Wyoming city. We stopped on a winter's day, and the winds were very cold. A spring or summer visit would be more pleasant. There is a Visitor's Center to describe the Memorial and the surrounding area. There is also a monument to Henry Joy, who was associated with completion of the LIncoln Highway, which passes through this area as well.

We also found a large boulder that is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. The stone has old pioneer inscriptions on it, but I haven't been able to determine much about it's history.
