Present-day South Pass City is Wyoming's second oldest incorporated town. It was founded in the summer of 1868, during the height of the area's gold rush. South Pass City experienced its gold rush after the bulk of westward emigration had taken place, although wagons continued to trickle over the nearby geographic South Pass until 1912. In 1968 a group of Wyoming's citizens banded together and purchased the remaining historic structures for donation to the public. The goal was to preserve one of the best examples of a frontier mining camp. As seen today, the town is almost exactly as it appeared a century ago. |
