The Northern Flicker (Colaptes
auratus) is also known as the Yellow-Shafted Flicker. It is a large woodpecker often found in open spaces where it spends considerable time on the ground foraging for ants. See also Woodpeckers.
The main photo on this page was taken in our backyard in Sandy, Utah. We have at least one of these in our backyard each
winter. Often we are host to both a male and female.
They are amazingly large, entertaining, and colorful. We have also seen them in the forested areas throughout the Colorado Plateau and most of the mountain west.
