 Blue Grouse
Blue Grouse.

The Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) is the most common of its type in canyon country. Although nonmigratory, populations move up and down moutain slopes annually, spending summer in mixed deciduous forests at lower elevations and winter in conifers higher up the slope.

 Notes

The main photo on this page was taken in Dinosaur National Park in Colorado.

We have seen these critters here an there throughout the west. Our best observation was in Dinosaur National Park near a trailhead. There was a small flock of maybe ten birds. They were on and around the vehicles, apparently picking the spattered bug remains from the grills and windshields. They are large and were not afraid of humans, although cautious.
