Canyon Country Animals
Birds: Killdeer
Named for its distinctive call, this is the largest of the ringed plovers. This is perhaps the most familiar shore bird in North America. In the summer months it can be found across almost the entire continent south of the tundra.

Notes
- The main photo on this page was taken along the Rainbow Terraces in Hot Springs State Park, Wyoming.
- We see killdeer all over in the west, from Omaha all the way west to the Great Salt Lake and beyond. It seems that wherever there is a body of water one might get to see one or more killdeer strolling about. I've even seen them in the dry sandhills areas of Nebraska, where the only visible water was that in the road side ditches.
- We had a killdeer lead us down a trail in Yellowstone National Park. She was very noisy and would wait for us to catch up before squawking off again. Our suspicion was that she had a nest nearby with young, and she was leading us away from them.
