Canyon Country Animals
Birds: Owls
There is a variety of owls in canyon country. Because they are nocturnal they are not often seen. They have a distinctive look, and when they fly they do not look like other predatory birds. Their hooting is unmistakable.

Notes
The main image on this page was taken from a clip art collection. The image to the left was created from a photo of a preserved owl in the Visitor Center at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
There are a wide variety of owls found in canyon country, but they are not often seen unless you hike in the early morning before sunrise and after darkness follows sunset. The small Burrowing Owls can sometimes be seen during the daylight hours sitting on the mounds left by Prairie Dogs.
We have seen the burrowing owls in northern Nevada, and a variety of other owls in Nebraska and Utah.
